Married couple, Dylan and Pamela Dowdy, are the artist duo behind Dowdy Studio and the Dowdy Studio Wagon, Dallas’ first mobile art shop. They also designed the all new KXT Spring Fundraising Campaign T-Shirt below!

Together they design, illustrate and handmake everything in their shop, from quirky screenprinted tees, pillows and bags, to graphic wooden jewelry, art prints, clocks, and more. All their artwork features their own hand-drawn illustrations, like the Lumberjack Mer Man (the unemployed lumberjack of the sea) and Grand Whale (an irregular hybrid of a musical whale and a grand piano). The dynamic duo pop up in their Dowdy Studio Wagon in a variety of restaurants, local venues, festivals and events in the DFW area and beyond. The two artists enjoy meeting great people in great places, sharing their passion for independent art and design with others.

From a Capitol email KXT just got:

It is with great sadness that we confirm that musician, rapper, activist and director Adam “MCA” Yauch, founding member of Beastie Boys and also of the Milarepa Foundation that produced the Tibetan Freedom Concert benefits, and film production and distribution company Oscilloscope Laboratories, passed away in his native New York City this morning after a near-three-year battle with cancer. He was 47 years old.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Yauch taught himself to play bass in high school, forming a band for his 17th birthday party that would later become known the world over as Beastie Boys.

With fellow members Michael “Mike D” Diamond and Adam “Adrock” Horovitz, Beastie Boys would go on to sell over 40 million records, release four #1 albums–including the first hip hop album ever to top the Billboard 200, the band’s 1986 debut full length, Licensed To Ill–win three Grammys, and the MTV Video Vanguard Lifetime Achievement award. Last month Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, with Diamond and Horovitz reading an acceptance speech on behalf of Yauch, who was unable to attend.

In addition to his hand in creating such historic Beastie Boys albums as Paul’s Boutique, Check Your Head, Ill Communication, Hello Nasty and more, Yauch was a founder of the Milarepa Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting awareness and activism regarding the injustices perpetrated on native Tibetans by Chinese occupational government and military forces. In 1996, Milarepa produced the first Tibetan Freedom Concert in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, which was attended by 100,000 people, making it the biggest benefit concert on U.S. soil since 1985’s Live Aid. The Tibetan Freedom Concert series would continue to stage some of the most significant benefit shows in the world for nearly a decade following in New York City, Washington DC, Tokyo, Sydney, Amsterdam, Taipei and other cities.

In the wake of September 11, 2001, Milarepa organized New Yorkers Against Violence, a benefit headlined by Beastie Boys at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom, with net proceeds disbursed to the New York Women’s Foundation Disaster Relief Fund and the New York Association for New Americans (NYANA) September 11th Fund for New Americans–each chosen for their efforts on behalf of 9/11 victims least likely to receive help from other sources.

Under the alias of Nathanial Hörnblowér, Yauch directed iconic Beastie Boys videos including ”So Whatcha Want,” ”Intergalactic,” “Body Movin” and “Ch-Check It Out.” Under his own name, Yauch directed last year’s Fight For Your Right Revisited, an extended video for “Make Some Noise” from Beastie Boys’ Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, starring Elijah Wood, Danny McBride and Seth Rogen as the 1986 Beastie Boys, making their way through a half hour of cameo-studded misadventures before squaring off against Jack Black, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as Beastie Boys of the future.

Yauch’s passion and talent for filmmaking led to his founding of Oscilloscope Laboratories, which in 2008 released his directorial film debut, the basketball documentary Gunnin’ For That #1 Spot and has since become a major force in independent video distribution, amassing a catalogue of such acclaimed titles as Kelly Reichardt’s Wendy and Lucy, Oren Moverman’s The Messenger, Banksy’s Exit Through The Gift Shop, Lance Bangs and Spike Jonze’s Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait Of Maurice Sendak, and many more.

Yauch is survived by his wife Dechen and his daughter Tenzin Losel, as well as his parents Frances and Noel Yauch.

Great headlining set by Jessica Lea Mayfield last night! The evening was perfect with calm weather, a great crowd and the best view of downtown Dallas, hands down.

Michael Donner opened the evening. Everyone loved his set.

Remember our Winter Auction where we put up a pair of passes to the Barefoot series - but you get to watch it from a canoe? It happened and it was AWESOME.

Here’s Charles, the owner of Trinity River Canoes. Been in business 22 years, touring folks on the Trinity. Far out, right?

Speaking of sponsors, thanks so much to all of them: The Belmont Hotel, Smoke, Virgin Mobile, Prekindle, Studio Movie Grill, Free My Music and Spune for their incredible booking services. More pictures soon.

OK, I admit it. I cave into my musical crushes on a daily...

OK, I admit it. I cave into my musical crushes on a daily basis. My latest one hails from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and his album Signs & Signifiers makes me wanna back comb my hair, smack my gum and shake what the good Lord gave me. Close your eyes and for a moment you might think you’re hearing one of the soundtracks to an early John Waters film (Mondo Trasho totally comes to mind) or the lost son of Link Wray, but no, he’s from the here and now and he’ll capture your heart for all eternity. Ladies and gentlemen, J.D.
Save the date everyone! May 12 - Leo Kottke live in concert. Ticket info here.

Bio below courtesy ATT Performing Arts Center:

Acoustic guitarist Leo Kottke was born in Athens, Georgia, but left town after a year and a half. Raised in 12 different states, he absorbed a variety of musical influences as a child, flirting with both violin and trombone, before abandoning Stravinsky for the guitar at age 11.

After adding a love for the country-blues of Mississippi John Hurt to the music of John Phillip Sousa and Preston Epps, Kottke joined the Navy underage, to be underwater, and eventually lost some hearing shooting at lightbulbs in the Atlantic while serving on the USS Halfbeak, a diesel submarine.

Kottke had previously entered college at the U of Missouri, dropping out after a year to hitchhike across the country to South Carolina, then to New London and into the Navy, with his twelve string. “The trip was not something I enjoyed,” he has said, “I was broke and met too many interesting people.”

Discharged in 1964, he settled in the Twin Cities area and became a fixture at Minneapolis’ Scholar Coffeehouse, which had been home to Bob Dylan and John Koerner. He issued his 1968 recording debut LP Twelve String Blues, recorded on a Viking quarter-inch tape recorder, for the Scholar’s tiny Oblivion label. (The label released one other LP by The Langston Hughes Memorial Eclectic Jazz Band.)

After sending tapes to guitarist John Fahey, Kottke was signed to Fahey’s Takoma label, releasing what has come to be called the Armadillo record. Fahey and his manager Denny Bruce soon secured a production deal for Kottke with Capitol Records.

Kottke’s 1971 major-label debut, “Mudlark,” positioned him somewhat uneasily in the singer/songwriter vein, despite his own wishes to remain an instrumental performer. Still, despite arguments with label heads as well as with Bruce, Kottke flourished during his tenure on Capitol, as records like 1972’s “Greenhouse” and 1973’s live “My Feet Are Smiling” and “Ice Water” found him branching out with guest musicians and honing his guitar technique.

With 1975’s Chewing Pine, Kottke reached the U.S. Top 30 for the second time; he also gained an international following thanks to his continuing tours in Europe and Australia.

His collaboration with Phish bassist Mike Gordon, “Clone,” caught audiences’ attention in 2002. Kottke and Gordon followed with a recording in the Bahamas called “Sixty Six Steps,” produced by Leo’s old friend and Prince producer David Z.

Kottke has been awarded two Grammy nominations; a Doctorate in Music Performance by the Peck School of Music at the U of Wisconsin, Milwaukee; and a Certificate of Significant Achievement in Not Playing the Trombone from the U of Texas at Brownsville with Texas Southmost College.

KXT Presents : Nick Lowe at the Granada Theater!

Here’s Gini’s interview with Stewart Copeland. What a super-interesting upbringing and insight into music. And his voice - magnificent. Enjoy!

That’s because the clip is for a cover of Gerry Rafferty’s “Right Down the Line.”

The video is simple in nature, not that you’d expect anything less from the no-frills Raitt. Shots of happy couples and families are interspersed with Raitt and her bandmates performing the song on at San Francisco’s abandoned Mission Theatre.

Released in 1978 as part of Rafferty’s City to City album, “Right Down the Line” reached the No. 12 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and was the number one single on the easy-listening chart for four non-consecutive weeks. Best known for that hit, as well as “Baker Street” and the Steeler’s Wheel song “Stuck in the Middle with You,” Rafferty passed away in January of 2011.

Raitt’s cover of “Right Down the Line” is off her new album, Slipstream, which arrives in stores on Tuesday.
