Robert Plant and the Band of Joy - “Angel Dance”
When the former Led Zeppelin frontman decided to create a new incarnation of his pre-Zep band (which included drummer John Bonham), he looked to guitarist Buddy Miller, who played on his Grammy-winning Raising Sand record with Alison Krauss. Miller brought in folk-rocker Patty Griffin and her rhythm section, as well as songwriter Darrell Scott to fill out the sound. Here, they take on Los Lobos’ “Angel Dance”, with Scott’s mandolin leading the charge. The self-titled record releases on September 14th.
Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - “Nothin’”
This song, from the heralded Raising Sand record, has more than one Texas connection. Produced by Fort Worth native T-Bone Burnett, it is also a cover of a song by Townes Van Zandt, with the wonderful blend of Krauss and Plant’s vocals. Burnett’s searing guitar turns this into a song that carries the weight of Van Zandt’s original, with an entirely new sonic palette.
Buddy Miller - “Worry Too Much”
Americana elder statesman Buddy Miller has kept quite busy in recent years, with his guitar playing, background vocals, and production work showing up on records by Patty Griffin and John Fogerty, and on Robert Plant and Alison Krauss’ Raising Sand tour. This track, from his 2004 release Universal United House of Prayer, is a cover of a song by Mark Heard, which Miller heard while working as an recording engineer.
